Young Researchers of Serbia is launching a crowdfunding campaign with the aim to protect the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) in the Special Nature Reserve “Kraljevac“.
In order to do that, we need your help!
WHO IS KORNJAČA SPORNJAČA?
The European Pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) is a unique and valuable species that plays an important role in preserving the balance of pond ecosystems. Although it is a strictly protected species in Serbia, it faces serious threats and its population is endangered due to habitat loss, pollution, climate change, being hit or injuried by vehicles while crossing roads etc.
WHAT IS OUR GOAL?
This is the first fundraising campaign to protect the European pond turtle in Serbia, which will enable a better understanding of the life cycle of the turtle and help in conservation activities.
To achieve this, we need to collect RSD 1,010,000.00 ( EUR 8,625.40)
WHAT WILL THE FUNDS BE USED FOR?
We will use collected funds to buy:
→ GPS devices (3 sets) with accompanying hardware and software for data collection, tracking the movement and behaviour of European pond turtles: RSD 910,000.00 (EUR 7,771.40)
→ equipment for exploring European pond turtles, such as nonius for measuring, turtle-catching drums, boat accumulator: RSD 100,000.00 (EUR 854.00)
What we will do to protect the European pond turtle?
Using GPS devices, researchers will collect information throughout the year. At the same time, morphological measurements and markings of individuals will be made in order to obtain estimates of the size of the population of European pond turtles in the Special Nature Reserve “Kraljevac”.
Together with the Association “Deliblatsko jezero”, which is the manager of the protected area “Kraljevac”, we will carry out a series of volunteer activities that will contribute to the protection of turtles.
